Police authorities in Imo State have raided a suspected Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB/ESN) camp, arresting 29 persons and also recovering arms and ammunition.

In a statement on Monday, the spokesman of the Imo State Police Command Henry Okoye said the suspected IPOB/ESN camp is located in Nempi, Oru West Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects included 25 males and four females allegedly linked to the proscribed group.

“This operation was initiated following the apprehension of a key suspect, Anukuru Nnana Emmanuel, ‘m’, 25yrs, on September 15, 2024, in Mgbidi. His vital confessions enabled police operatives to locate and dismantle the camp.”

The police said some of the items recovered from the raid include “four pump action guns, two locally made revolvers, five locally made pistols, three AK-47 magazines, a Point of Sale (PoS) machine, and 20 rounds of live cartridges, one white SUV and local bulletproof charms used by the criminal syndicate.”

Also, over N200,000 allegedly extorted from kidnapping victims was recovered during the operation.

“These findings underscore the persistent threat posed by these groups in the State,” the police said, adding that investigations are ongoing and efforts are in “progress to apprehend the manufacturers of the locally-made guns”.

“We are dedicated to ensuring public safety and will continue to take decisive action against criminal elements in our state,” the police said.
