Gunmen on rampage in Imo: Shoot 5 policemen, couple dead

Rampaging gunmen shoot five police officers and a couple dead at Okpala junction in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, on Friday as other Nigerians were busy with Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

The couple who were identified as Mr and Mrs Chinaka Nwagu, natives of Amankwo Okpala community were shot dead because two of the policemen had taken shelter in their restaurant when the gunmen began the sporadic shooting.

It was gathered gathered policemen who were attached to the neighbouring Abo Mbaise police Division had driven to the junction to eat before the gunmen accosted them.

According to an eyewitness, the policemen were eating when the gunmen drove to the scene and opened fire on them.

According to the eye witness, while three police were shot dead at the scene, two others ran to the restaurant being run by the late couple.

However, the gunmen tracked them to the restaurant and shoot them and the couple dead.

The gunmen also took the rifles of the policemen away after killing them.

However, the identity of the slain police officers cannot be ascertained as at the time of filing in this story.

Also, the Imo State Police Command has not reacted to the killing of its operatives.

The incident comes less than a month after gunmen ambushed and killed five personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the same area.
